I have recently been involved in a complex project, which is quite haphazard at the moment. I'm trying to Set up PMIS in SharePoint. One of the main reason already available (project site) but not used at its capability. I am new to SharePoint and would like to discuss the best ways to use SharePoint extensively to manage the project.

The things I could think of is
Document Management
Risks, Issues (lists)
High level milestones (detailed tasks use a specific scheduling tool)
Internal team communication

Mili -

Used appropriately, SharePoint can be a good solution to consolidate project information. I find it a bit more structured than tools like Confluence.

The challenge is in getting team members to use it consistently and in a timely manner - this is not a tools issue.

I would suggest starting with a simple site structure focused on one or two artifacts or types of information - pilot that and see whether things are working well or not before layering in additional capabilities.

Hi Mili,

I also pretend to do the same with an European project comprising 26 partners.
It gives us flexibility as we can design different templates easily and share them.
We plan to use it mostly as a document repository, for general information and as a "Whos´s who".
Communications are being made through Webex, though.
I agree with Kiron for the challenge on getting it used from team members. I've reserved some time at the kickoff meeting to enforce his use.

Have you considered managing the implementation of sharepoint as a project of its own?

I use SHAREPOINT to manage the project portfolio of the company especially with regard to document management, sharing schedules, risks and stakeholders.
For a big project like yours I think the important questions to ask are: - Is sharepoint already installed in your home? - Is project internal to the company or outside? - Is technical expertise available? - Are the stakeholders who are going to be manpower already familiar with this type of tool?
The answers will allow you to decide whether it is worth investing in a system (continue to invest) as sharepoint and secure it or use simpler tools of collaboration and easy to implement gradually for an international team...

Regarding this questions, in my case:
- Sharepoint is already deployed
- The project is external but we are the coordinators
- We've got an internal project assistant expert in Sharepoint
Nowadays, I'm investigating other options.
Hope this helps.
