Do you pay enough attention to Project Milestones when creating your project schedule, project timeline and in your overall project plan?

Sometimes we often create and track milestones that are not a high priority and does not reflect the proper top priority milestones, those that if are delayed will put on the project in Jeopardy.

That’s an interesting question. Milestones are usually created for the Project Charter, well before the schedule is created. Hopefully, the milestones are congruent with the plan. But if we made some discoveries in the planning process that invalidated the original milestones, I would want to revise the milestones. I can’t say that I’ve ever had this happen. Would your critical path analysis help you determine which milestones are priority?

Interesting response about Milestones are created in Project Charter... I will let others response to this statement to see where the conversations lead :)

Questions to debate:

Are milestones created in Project Charter?
Are Project Charter Milestones, general and realistic or just Preliminar milestones?
How often Project Charter milestones remains the same tr project?

What the deliverable in Time Management Knowledge Area regarding milestones?

Interesting debate... Please refer to PMBOK pages with responses...

Milestones are often defined as part of chartering a project or before a detailed schedule is developed, but their dates would usually only be committed as part of baselining the overall project plan.

The level of importance of milestones varies - a PM might be interested in a larger number of milestones than an executive sponsor might. Milestones which drive payment tranches are also usually treated with more care than non-payment driving ones.

In my view sufficient time is given for finalising milestones. Milestones are reviewed & finalised with customers
