As we know Planning is not the silver bullet, it may not solve everything by itself but it certainly makes a great trigger on the gun.

What are the other tools needed?

"Monitoring and control" is where you "measure" the plan. Correct deviations, adapt and correct assumptions made while planning.
Tiago, that's a good point too. thanks for comment

Probably Closing, as that is the only time you really know if the project is a success of not.
Sante, I agree the closing will ensure the success of the project. thanks for comment

There are no silver bullets. Disciplined and right-sized applications of the appropriate processes across all process groups is required for a successful project.

Kiron
Kiron, looks like it I agree with you it is all cumulative efforts brings the end result

Drat. Kiron beat me to it by a few minutes. :-)
A successful project is the result of balance between the process groups. PMs who focus on one process above another are guaranteed to encounter problems, or derail the project entirely.
Eric, I like that word of balancing and it is true we can not just focus on one process group and leave the others. thanks for comment

I agree Eric and Drat, However in my "project world" balanced initiation and planning is a luxury seldom afforded by Executive Management. Therefore solid control and monitoring becomes the silver bullet that includes quality, performance, reporting and change control.
Lawrence thanks for your comment and been in line with Eric only.

Drat is EXCLAMATION it is a mild expression of annoyance or irritation.

Yes, other things should be considered:-

1) Monitoring and controlling (including Earn value analysis EVA and Variance analysis)
2) Monitoring the Business documents and Project management plan
3) Deciding what is the best development approach is to be used.
4) ...e.t.c

Even the poplar adage says " "Failing to plan is planning to fail" , however you are right brother Riyadh.

BR,
Mansour
Mansour, thanks for your comment no doubt that planning is very important but putting all processes working together is the key for success.

Agree with Eric and Kiron. A mistake is to approach things with tunnel vision in one area or aspect. All pieces work together in solving a puzzle.
Andrew , very true and I can't agree more needs to look for the whole pictures and focus on all processes, thanks for your comment
