Who is currently using Critical Chain project management?

I'm wondering about where this method is being applied today. I'm also looking for areas where it was attempted but didn't work out.--- would love to hear those stories.

Mike and I must run in very different circles. I've never seen a team be able to calculate a Critical Path without PERT (meaning a task dependency network and task duration estimates.)
I would agree with that Rick. To calculate the CP, you need network diagrams which depends on task dependencies and estimates.

In agile, Ive seen many using the critical chain by introducing buffers especially in their initial estimates until they figure out the required velocity.

There are a few scheduling tools out there specifically built to support CCPM. I used ProChain a long time back and this site reviews others: http://www.marris-consulting.com/en/points...ftware-solution

A major constraint (no pun intended) for its utilization is the unwillingness of leadership teams to change their mindset and behavior.

It is still a fringe approach which is likely why the volunteer committee who produced the PMBOK Sixth Edition elected to drop it from the Schedule Management knowledge area.

Yes, Sergio. I also noted the apparent confusion between Critical Path and Critical Chain.

I view Critical Chain as an evolution based upon Critical Path, one which uses task estimate "safety" in a much more advantageous manner. And it's that technique that I'm asking about.

I see you are using Agile AND Critical Chain -- do you like how that's working out?
Just to add some information Critical Chain is based on Linear Programing that belongs to Operation Research field. Mr. Goldratt does not "invent" anything. The took those ideas that are outside there from 1800 mainly related to Theory of Restrictions and made them popular. I worked into an USA company and I took the courses with Mr Goldratt becasue at this time they was the only person able to teach the method. I was trained in my grade and posgrade career in the University on Linear Programing so it was very easy for me to apply the method. I made my own research (as part of the group I belonged in that USA company) to adapt the method to use with Agile methods. It was in 1995 but the trining I took was in 1989. So, if you take any software (there are free of use) that supports Linear Programing you can use it for any type of initiative. Then you can put it inside MS Project for example.

Unfortunately the list is in French right now, but it still gives you the names of the companies and the source of the information. We will publish an English version within one month. This list is just those companies that have publicly published RESULTS of using CCPM.

Later this year we will publish a more comprehensive list of over 900 organizations that use Critical Chain worldwide. We are currently going through the validation process of these references.

Most of the failures I have seen were actually poor implementations.

A few recent users include Siemens in designing big machines, Mazda in developing technology & launching the latest models, and managing one if the largest global SAP implementations in recent years (and saving hundreds of millions in reduced consulting fees). There are hundreds of client case studies claiming significant reductions in duration and cost on the CCPM Software websites.

And there is more to it than just aggregating uncertainty into a buffer.

Ian, can you clarify if the ERP implementation was Mazda or was it a different firm? i'm also interested in hearing more details about what constitutes a "poor implementation?" Sometimes it's helpful to learn from the mistakes of others!
