what would be your main set of project risk management recommendations for projects that depend 100% on volunteer labor and donors?

I'm working on a paper for my master about Risk Management for Projects depending 100% on volunteer labor and donors. This after a volunteering experience that I had in Africa where I was left alone with no support, engagement from the sponsor and using my Gmail account to ask for quotes and information. Of course, the project did not finish successfully. I would love your insight regarding this.
