A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.

A very broad definition to define the heart of a profession. When looking to direct all major organizational projects through a PMO, what are some general rules of thumb to define what constitutes a project? When should a PMO step in?

Updating a marketing campaign to a site involves Marketing, IT, training, and a few weeks of work. When does this shift from standard business process - to a project handled by the PMO?

We have changed this definition along our PMO life cycle that has more than 10 years. As today we have 3 different models to define the endevours that deliver the strategy.
1. Small efforts that we define as xpress with 2 weeks effort ,no more than 2 production lines involved and are not affecting our technical architecture.
2. Proyects that are going to define a closed scope and budget.
3. Continues delivery teams that are involving strategy delivery for long term efforts that requires multiple teams and afforts and organization is going to give the budget to keep a continues team producing the value.

A project management office becomes necessary when your project affects or is affected by other projects or business operations.

The PMO will manage organizational priorities, processes and resources to ensure they are used appropriately to meet the business goals.

Anything and everything can be a project. The question is how much project management do you need to apply to it?
