Has someone ever tried to say something negative about you and you took it as a compliment?

The other day one of my coworkers told me that I was no nonsense and direct. I realized that she was not saying it as a compliment. Apparently, that can be intimidating to people.
I took it as a compliment because that is what I am. I am nice about it, but time is money and I don't like wasting time beating around the bush. I am here to do a job, let's get it done.

I've been told my many that I'm like a robot. I appreciate this because sometimes I need to be focused and emotionless to cut through the chaff to get things done.

If he came in, learned our processes and then suggested changes, we would listen. That is not how it happened. And I do not know what Standard he is following. It is not PMI for sure. He tried to tell me that the Proj Mgt Plan should not have details in it. It is a proposal. I responded that it is called a plan and therefore is part of the planning stage.
He said a project management plan *shouldn't* have details in it?? I would have promptly tossed him out the door for that. Having a different project management style is one thing, but having no clue about the most elementary project management concepts is intolerable.

I know. It took me a second to pick my jaw up off of the floor.
This guy is here for now. So after some careful thought over the weekend, I decided that I will need to step up and do what management did not do for him when he arrived. I plan to meet with him and explain what he needs to do to survive here and be successful. Number one is going to be to listen to understand, not to listen to comment. Number two is to learn the existing processes and follow them for awhile before discussing changes. Then to focus on gathering the information needed for the documents and to work with other people on your team. He needs to understand that he was brought in to ease the burden on existing managers and so far he has been doing the opposite.
If he responds well to our meeting, he may be re-trainable. If not, then it is only a matter of time until he is out the door.

It depends on the context & the person from whom I am getting a positive/negative comment. I do a little introspection and take it either as a compliment or may be something to be improved.

I was just thinking that if people have a problem with me being truthful, no nonsense (but polite), keeping meetings from going off tangent, and asking tem to tell me when they are going to complete their tasks, is the problem really me? Or maybe it is it them?

Thank you. I am a bit (OK a lot) annoyed (totally pissed off) today. I will get over it. I am just trying to hold my tongue at work until I can speak rationally. I need to vent to someone and my friends here on Projectmanagement.com are the lucky recipients. :)
