In my opinion the top 3 challenge communication skills for a PM that is managing a project team are: Assertiveness, clearness and influence.
How can you come over each ?

Well It is hard the first time, but next time is less. I think the key is to prepare what is going to communicate before to communicate it. Well supporting and planning your communications will avoid any wrong understanding and will allow you to verify the vocabulary to use to avoid frictions. Of course the last one, will depends on you. Every PM should be a leader will all that it includes. Respect is not mandatory it is something that you as PM have to get from your team by themselves.
Silence (Communication Gap), Miscommunication (creating misunderstanding and frustration), Emotional or Cultural barriers & differences Saving Changes...

As a CMMI ATM team member, I have got opportunities to interview the project teams from a programmer to the senior most leader in organization.
One of the common challenge that came out clearly --
Many times, out of fear from causing customer discomfort, managers are unable to say “No” when they are pushed to wall for delays in meeting their commitments. This is done in spite of knowing that they would never be able to meet the timeline or deliverable which is pushed by customer.
This inability to say NO creates a major trust issue later on; when you would not be able to meet the dates. Project Plan is always a “plan” and it is bound to change from impact coming from changes in scope, timelines and multiple other factors.
The need is to empower the team in being transparent and train them on handling “difficult conversations” in an effective manner. Saving Changes...

Hi Kevin, based on my experience in Middle East, the top 3 challenges are:
1. lack of assertiveness, clarity from PMs (even at times Senior Management) in order not to burn bridges with other Stakeholders. As Vipul mentioned there are certain instances that a NO generally means a YES
2. opposing cultures including but not limited to ethnicity, language barriers etc. making it more difficult for the whole team to work effectively
3. lack of trust in PMT thereby defying instructions leading to decreased efficiency, low morale and productivity of the site team Saving Changes...
Clarity in communication is the most important.
It should not be in a way that others may conclude some different meaning. Communication should be very clear so that everyone would be on the same page after the discussion. Saving Changes...
