The art of negotiation is an important soft skill for every PM to master. There are a host of negotiation techniques. The specific technique to be employed during any situation is dependent on certain factors governing the situation.

The disposition of the stakeholder with whom negotiations is carried out with must also be factored in. You may want to consider the stakeholders understanding of the situation and expectations, while also taking into account their position on the power/influence grid, so that you can appropriate the amount of time and energy required when carrying out negotiations.

Challenges while negotiating with someone is usually the persons determination not to compromise. Sometimes, you have to make an extra effort to get the other party to see why they must agree to your terms while letting them know the inevitable disasterous consequences of not going with your way.

Obstacles may arise, but patience, persistence and a soft tongue will eventually break the camels back. Somtimes, from superior to underling, a strict instruction and forcing techniques may work. That is the best style if you ask me, as long as you know what you aim to achieve, and if you are in a position of authority.

Focus on interests and not positions and (just as with conflict resolution) adapt your approach to the context of the negotiation.

Negotiation is a form of conflict. So look for a win-win where possible.

I think the biggest challenge to negotiations is emotions. People allow the emotions to cloud everything. They stop listening to understand both sides.

Approach negotiations calmly, with a win-win strategy, and be fearless in asking for what you want or need. Always trust your gut feelings. I learned this by negotiating with very unsavory characters when I was in insurance claims. That was the best school for negotiations.

The Best way is been positive, proactive proposing win-win solution, understanding the interest and limitation of the counterpart, move away your emotions and the most important ... believe you can get a final and lasting positive outcome.
