Hello,
I have worked in the Oil and Gas industry away from home now for almost 10 years. I am a Red Seal Journeyman Electrician by trade and have worked as a Project/Construction Coordinator for the past 6 years. I have decided it's time for me to work in my city and be home every night. I would like to further my career into the Project Management world as it is similar to what I am doing now and I enjoy it. I have been on the fence about going for PMP certification but not sure if that is the best step forward or if attaining CAPM first is beneficial. I would love to hear some advice on what may be my best first steps to take!
Thanks,

It might be challenging to move directly into a PM role so you might want to start with a Project Administrator/Coordinator/Analyst role working with a senior PM for a period of time to gain sufficient focused-PM experience and to get some valuable mentoring and coaching.

As far as credentials go, I'd suggest skipping the CAPM and pursue the PMP once you have sufficient commensurate experience to make having it an asset and not just making you appear "paper certified".

Good luck!

Agreed with Kiron!!! You have a good experience, so, start to apply PMP!!! It's the best one to recognize your skills, knowledge and talent as PM career!!

If you are willing to put in the time, then the PMP is the one to go for, as you will end up doing it anyway.
