How to make your team do the JHA?

JHA Job Hazard Analysis is very important to fill out the sheet before executing the job but often you hear denial from old folks as ooh we've been doing this job over twenty years then incident happen you feel that you need to implement procedures to make the team evaluate the risk and sign the form for JHA, this way it ensure the team to go through a check list and find what's need to be done, so it's purpose is not just filling for the sake of filling out the document of JHA rather is to remind and ensure all safety measure has been taken before execution of the task.

Could you please suggest ways to make the team do this on regular basis specially for jobs identified with higher RPN Risk probability Number.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Positive:

1. Ensure staff understand the rationale behind the process and make sure the process is as leaned out as it can be.

2. Provide incentives for zero job hazard issue weeks/months at the team level

Negative: Make it a policy - if it is not done, folks get a yellow card. If they get more than one yellow card, they lose their jobs

Kiron, Thanks for your prompt response. I liked the positive ones but for football (soccer referee) pulling yellow card and final red card it is not easy as we both live and operate in Canada that's a long way to do progressive discipline.
I also started to educate people and enhance this culture, but I still need to find more ways to make them do it regularly based on RPN.

Mandate it. Either they are in compliance or not. It's binary.

If there is a need (requirement) for this to be completed based on some predefined criteria, then, that is what is prescribed to be done. I'm assuming there are other policies that the team has to complete for compliance. Simply add this to the list. No need to over complicate it.

Andrew, thanks for your feedback I hear you but we still have grey area we can not mandate everything, something like grounding is must to while working on electrical is mandated by the code, if we mandate it then it has to be applied by all different groups then we need to add at least 15 minutes to the schedule of each task require JHA. I will call a meeting for key people to discuss various options and try to reach consensus.

Some ideas:
1. Identify the people with social influence in the group you want to fill out the JHA and get them on your side. When people see the 'cool kids' among them completing the JHA, they might be inclined to do so as well.
2. See if you can provide some special benefits or privileges to those who fill out the JHA. When people start hearing about the benefits, they might want to complete the JHA.

Consider this also from a marketing standpoint. Telling someone who has done something for decades to now fill out a form might come across as the company doubting their skills, so they might resist completing the form in opposition. Perhaps you can describe the JHA as a chance for skilled people to document their experience and knowledge to help keep others safe.

We have reached to agreement after discussion and consensus that those tasks with higher RPN or any change in procedures is a must fill out the form and activities less risky we left it optional
