Glancing through the basics, Kanban was developed by Toyota for manufacturing i.e operations. Now, how can this board which is devised for operations can be used for projects as these are two different areas.

I use it to help me track my project tasks. I still use MS Project for all my projects. Kanban is an additional tool for me. The purpose of Kanban is to limit your Backlog or your To Do on the board. The board gives you a good visual of what you are working on. Customize the board to your needs.

Whether there is an ongoing flow of work or a finite backlog, a Kanban board is a good way t visualize the flow of work, identify your bottlenecks, and help expedite those work items which need to be expedited.

The key difference is that the first column will eventually be empty on a project whereas for operations there will always be new items coming in. Another difference is that cycle time & lead time should be predictable for operations for different classes of work items whereas for projects, there may not be the same level of predictability about these metrics.

I use the concept of a Kanban board simplistically, primarly to visually show my deliverables or milestones within a project. One of the guiding principles is to limit your WIP to facilitate increased throughput. Though I don't use this as a standalone methodology, I think it works great to supplement agile or traditional methods.
