I've done this for all of my professional credentials but the level of effort and formal documentation was low - usually just identifying a set of activities and milestone dates along with setting a budget and doing some basic risk management.

I did a quasi-project plan for accomplishing my MBA. I will say that it was a relatively flexible plan in that it allowed for the adjustment of milestones (course category completions) as well as an overall schedule for completion. I think for me, as a goal oriented person, it was important to follow a plan, but not necessarily needed to be at the level of project plan. I do however find it valuable to tailor any academic plans according to certain project management principles. For example, identifying certain risks may help guide a schedule for completion.

Hi Sante,
I did this for my Master's and I'm now trying it with my PhD. The first attempt was to plan my Master's following a traditional waterfall approach, and it worked fine (except for the scope). I've learnt my lesson, and now I'm using a hybrid approach: waterfall for the actual research, and agile for writing the thesis (since the scope keeps on changing).

Ah exactly. I'm in a similar boat. Doing the research in waterfall, and using Agile for writing makes perfect sense. I'm a year or two off writing yet, so it will be interesting to check in on how you are progressing with that. Good luck :-)
Yes me too.. for my professional courses. mainly help me alot to plan and reserve funds for my future courses.

Creating a business justification for my education was particularly useful. By doing so I was able to objectively see that getting a Masters would definitely help my career, and I could calculate my expected salary increase against the cost of tuition to see just how much it would benefit me. The business justification helped me realize that getting a Ph.D. wouldn't benefit my career, but would just satisfy my desire to have one.
