Artificial Intelligence and other advancements in science and technology are taking the fore front in the future of humanity. What hope is there for project managers as these smart robots/ machines are likely to undermine the relevance of project managers soon? Saving Changes...
This topic has come up a few times over the past months in this discussion group. The consensus of respondents has been that rather than fearing AI, we should look at it as a means of freeing ourselves from rote activities so we can better focus on the soft skills needed to be a successful PM.
So long as project team members & other key project stakeholders are human beings, we will need human PMs.

I would look forward to the day when embedded AI engines in project management software automatically produce relevant metrics and provide decision making support / advice. They would be great additions to the project managers arsenal of tools. Nothing to be frightened about!!

Fear is absolutely far from what is expected. Perhaps, self evolution as well is as important. We are already part of this strategically designed architecture as we provide the data that will eventually be sorted by the intelligent machines.

What people do not know is: we are surrounded of AI devices (software and hardware) from long time ago. From refrigerators to cel phones. I started working with AI in 1989. The point is today it becomes buzzwords as any other type of things. Forget about it. And take into account this: the final decision is always on hand of the human being. The AI device, the only thing that do, is to help the human being presenting three alternatives after analyzing lot of data and alternatives. No more than that.

Dear Sergio, you may have been dealing with artificial intelligence in a sense, but the technological singularity is entirely a new frontier. At this stage, fururists are still in the abyss about the result of this occurrence. In a nutshell, this is the stage where these machines become so complex that they start to make certain decisions, fending for their existence as machines and perhaps, replicating at a more exponential rate than ever imagined. Right now, we have programs that weite and create other programs.
When you start to question the very essense of life and realise that what we call life, is majorly a composition of several non living atoms/molecules, then, you may not doubt the potential of machines to gain some sort of consciousness. This may sound like science fiction, but there is a great deal of information from trends reavealing that it is very likely that soon, the machines shall start making independent well calculated decisions with or without our permission.

What you said is available today from 1980. I am researching on the field using Ai and quantum computing to find ways to imitate conscousness. Never machines will have free will. No scientitits will allow a machine act as it own. It could be possible? Indeed. Inside refrigerators you canl find fuzzy logic devices that do that today. But it is a matter of use.
