I agree with the comments here.
I think PM should be prepared to identify, assess and then take risk when dealing with project uncertainty, to gain a specific benefit (schedule or budget) for the project.

Risks are a part of life in general. The question is, are we opportunity takers? :)
Andrew... I would like to connect with you and discuss your comment. I have been doing research on risk management... and in particular opportunity management.

Project management at its core is about reducing uncertainty, e.g. by creating a plan or providing a process like scrum. So yes, project management is all about risk taking (and managing).
And all decisions are risky.

When teaching at a major aerospace company, I would always ask the students whether this company was a risk taker. Almost everyone said no. Then we would discuss how in the world the company bid on on research programs.... or production contracts with high risk deliveries.....? Clearly there was risk. The question is whether the risk is bounded and understood. A solid risk management foundation is key. There are no sure things.

Project Managers should be risk takers as they 'lead' various efforts. The calculated risk taking should be inline with organization's appetite for risks.

I agree with Mr Sante, it depend on organization and also depend on Project Manager because the project manager who understands the role of risk taker and has mastered the risk assessment process will be able to more effectively deal with the unique aspects of a project.
