what happened to critical chain method?
Network:240

I'm reviewing a CAPM course upgrade to PMBOK 6th ediition. Critical Chain has been removed from the 6th edition without any explanation. Would someone please illuminate me? Thanks.

Isn't it now called 6.5.2.3 Resource optimization in 6th edition, what is part of Develop schedule tools and techniques?

Resource optimization was there in 5th edition and in my opinion, it's quite different from the principles of CC.

Very strange. Our company has just started using it.

David -

Just because the volunteer committee decided that CC didn't make the short list doesn't make it valuable. They did the same thing with Pareto and I'd argue that is equally if not more commonly used than CC.

There were a number of such eliminations between the versions - I believe it is a reflection on what the committee felt represented the vital few (some Pareto irony there!) tools & techniques...

Have they (PMI or the committee) ever made official statements as to why they removed these components?

I haven't pursued it too much, Sante - I realize the competing forces at play. On one side they'd like to include a large number of commonly used tools & techniques but on the other side, they don't want to have too much growth edition over edition.

Might be worth a note to the PMI standards lead for the Sixth Edition...

Thank you all. Petar, I believe you are correct and I will use that section. I'm very grateful. David

Dear David, I think Patrick is right and my answer is may be a bit misleading. I actually studied on the 6th edition, and thought that if CC was there before but now not, its content is may be covered by the available TT. From what I know CC deals with buffers and resources. In 6th buffers are called reserves, such TT is referred in schedule network analysis. I think kind change log 5th to 6th would be helpful to understand.

Hi Petar, I passed your suggestion on to PMI, I agree changes should be documented for the benefit of all. David
