I'm a fan of the 10/20/70 model - 10% formal training, 20% relationship-based (e.g. getting mentored), 70% practical experience.

This applies for both hard and soft skills.

The practical experience is most helpful and interactions with experienced professionals is another great way. For confusing/difficult topics, reading reputed authors/bloggers helps a lot.
