How useful is COBIT certification?
Network:274

Hi community, I'm interested in COBIT certification, but I don't really know too much about it. Could you please tell me what is its purpose and why you think a project manager should know about it?

How useful is PMP of any other certification? The same for COBIT.

Hello Jesus,

Boiled down, COBIT is an IT governance framework - aligning business objectives to your IT domains.
It is nice to have, but not necessary - as most businesses are adopting ITIL and aligning business to IT is accomplished in Service strategy domain of ITIL.

I am studying for a COBIT 5 certification right now. We are adopting COBIT governance. I am pursuing the certification because I want to be the guiding force in our PMO in the implementation. I think being certified will give me that edge. I don't know if going as far as a certification is for everyone.

Jesus -

A Project Manager is not necessarily required to acquire COBIT certification. Dinah has also answered the 'Why' part. COBIT is like a superset of ITIL. It is to manage and plan the governance of enterprise IT efficiently.
You may google for more details.

COBIT 5 is a single integrated framework. It is aligned to other relevant standards and frameworks. It provides:
A guidance written in non-technical, technology-agnostic common language
A simple architecture with guidelines to produce consistent solutions
A seamless integration with different ISACA frameworks
COBIT 5 is considered the most comprehensive and updated business framework for governance and management of enterprise IT.

COBIT aligns enterprise goals with IT goals.

There are 37 processes for governance in the following groups
Evaluate, Direct and Monitor
Align, Plan and Organize
Build, Acquire and Implement
Deliver, Service and Support
Monitor, Evaluate and Assess

We are focusing on the Governance section (Evaluate, Direct and Monitor) originally.

I find this really interesting. I'm going to search deeper to analyze if some of this can be proposed for implementation. Thank you Dinah for your sharing.

You're welcome. Go to the ISACA website to learn more. There is a lot more to it than I can share in a post here. And I am still learning.
