Understand what the role means within the context of your organization and what the expectations are. From that, like others mention, learn through immersion.

Hi Julie, the best way to learn is what you've just done: a jump start in the profession by engaging in a project management role. If you can have the PMBOK guide carried with a shoulder strap, then it's very fantastic. All you have to do is to behave so that the theory in the book and the realities in the field be conformed.Good luck! Saving Changes...
Hi Julie, I agree with Kiron. Find a mentor who can be your guide and ask questions. Being a PM on a project now means a lot of things in different organizations; from paper pusher / administrative assistant / note taker, up to the person who monitors and controls the way a project is run to include the budget.
Obviously there was no on-boarding to provide you with some idea of what you need to do. If there are other PMs in the organization ask a lot of questions.
When I was initially made a PM, I also kept a daily log of what I did to make sure I could go back and do a lessons learned on my own actions.
I wish you all the best on your journey. As you can see there are a lot of resources here to use. Read the articles on this site. I have used a lot of the information I see here, there is truly a wealth of knowledge on this site. Also if you live in a Metropolitan area see if there is a PMI chapter where you can go to ask questions if there are no other PMs in your organization. Saving Changes...

Thanks for all the great responses. I've reached out, found a mentor, and a class at a local community college I can take on-line. I think it's a good start!
