Now that I've achieved my CAPM, how can I get my first job in project management? Your advice is appreciated!

Hi Sherry,

Congratulations on achieving your CAPM and welcome onboard this community.

I am not sure what industry are you looking forward to start off your PM career with but regardless, the best role that you would benefit from at this stage is to look for a Project Coordinator Role. You will learn a lot from being in this position even though sometimes it might feel like an administrative role but at the end, you will be exposed to various aspects of any project.

Good Luck !

Thank you, Rami! Coming from a design background, I've been targeting marketing project management, but I think I could also do well in the IT field. I'm open to getting in on the ground floor anywhere in project management as a project coordinator.

Thanks again,
-Sherry

Thank you, Sante.

I have been struggling to get past a first interview, despite a year of related experience (credentialing coordination) and over 20 in graphic design (marketing coordination). Perhaps now that I have the credential, prospective employers will view my application materials differently. What do you think?
It certainly can't hurt. The CAPM and PMP are well known project management certifications, so it's only a matter of time before you land the role you want.

With a design background you can open up more avenues in the tech world, especially as it applies to web or user interface design. If you can show any training or experience in Agile or Scrum you open up a wider avenue. Scrum Masters are not project managers but Scrum Masters who know project management are very valuable, and vice versa. You can gain certification as a Scrum Master (CSM) in a few days. It is relatively easy but not cheap. Another certification for Scrum Masters is Professional Scrum Master (PSM). That certification is a bit more rigorous but the cost is around $150.
