Does anyone use Project Management software that works exceptionally well in an Municipal environment in Canada? What software are you using and what makes it good in the Municipal environment? (pros and cons). Thank you in advance!

Cindy -

PM software covers a wide range of needs from resource management to scheduling to budgeting to collaboration. Is there a specific area which you are interested in?

I do know that MS Project is commonly used for scheduling technology projects and Primavera for construction projects in some of the Ontario municipalities.

We are looking for Project Management software that could be used throughout our Municipality (planning, engineering, operations, special Council projects, finance, HR, recreation, tourism, etc, etc.) Something that is flexible enough to handle the different needs of each department, yet easy to work with, exceptional collaboration tools, time management, resource management, easy change management, and has solid outputs (gaunt charts, critical path, etc).

Project Management software is industry and country agnostic (though, language support is not always available). With the numerous options out there; MS Project, Clarity, Primavera, etc., there should not be any issues finding one that best supports the specific needs of the organization.

I am not aware of any PM program specific to municipal environments.

I know a former CIO of Memphis, Tennessee (population 653,000), and he used MS Project to manage projects throughout the city's various departments. I also know that Seattle, Washington (population 724,000) uses MS Project as well. Looking at Vernon's population (41,000) I imagine MS Project should meet all the city's needs. Depending how you deploy MS Project you probably won't need to use MS Server, which will save Vernon money.
