I’m a fairly new to this community having just received my PMP in March 2018. There is no chapter that is reasonably close to where I live to contribute and volunteer at on a regular basis. Just wondering for others who may be in a similar situation, what kinds of volunteering opportunities are you doing to receive the giving back/volunteering PDU points? Thank you in advance for your comments!

Cindy -

You can volunteer for any not for profit organization - many of them would love to get help from folks with PM experience (e.g. planning & leading events or fundraising campaigns).

You can also look for virtual volunteering opportunities through PMI - their VRMS is a good starting point (https://www.pmi.org/membership/volunteer).

Cindy, you can teach a class about schedules, risk management, effects of quality, etc to your team members and that will qualify as "giving back." You can also create content for LinkedIn or other social media platforms about Project Management. If you have the time and tenacity, you could even try to create some content for your organization's quarterly newsletter relating to Project Management.

There are tons of ways to give back without working with a local chapter. Take a look at your CCRS page on pmi.org to get your juices flowing for ideas. To do that follow these steps:
1. Log into pmi.org
2. On the upper left of the navigation bar, click myPMI
3. In the sub-menu that displays, click on "Report PDUs on CCRS"
4. On the left menu, click "Report PDUs" and then click on the "?" symbol next to each type to learn more about how to earn those PDUs

Condy, you could register for volunteer activities with PMI, and they shoot emails every now and then to ask for volunteers. The work is always online and for an hour most times. I haven't done this kind of work, but many here have.

How about local agencies or non-profits?

My method to earn points is to see on demand webinars inside this site. I am in the same situation than you regarding local chapters then beyond the seminars I am participating into volunteer activities posted inside the PMI site. For example, at this time, Scheduling standard is posted for public review.

Hi Cindy,
you can think in creating the chapter on you area :)
PMIEf is also a program to consider, the mission is to help schools apply PM techniques in classes.
Writing and peer doc. revision is also an option.

Vets2PM and Coach2Action are two pro bono/volunteer programs I've participated in. They're programs where you provide project management coaching/mentoring over the phone.

With Vets2PM, you work with retired military personnel and help them establish goals that will enable them to transition from military processes to traditional project management.

I've only worked with Coach2Action once; my work schedule got crazy and kept me from continuing after the first engagement ended. In it, I partnered with another project manager and helped coach an individual who worked for a non-profit, to introduce project management processes into her organization. I think the specifics, here, will vary by the needs of the organization.
