To whom do we owe the greatest credit for the birth of modern project management?

This might be a brain teaser. Try and name a person rather than an institution (ie. PMI).

Clarify "modern" PM, Sante :-). Are you referring to the set of practices distilled in the 50s and 60s with projects like the Polaris nuclear sub or are you referring to something more contemporary?

Hmm, maybe after the Gantt chart (1917), after CPM (1957), after PERT (1958), after WBS (1962), lets go with after PMI was established in 1969.

Spot on Kiron. I would say the 50's and 60's seem to be dawn of modern project management. But as I said earlier, let the starting line begin in 1969 with PMI because that's when things went from project management, to the project management profession before the birth of all the big bodies of knowledge.

In terms of contemporary/modern project management, as it relates to Agile frameworks, I would lean towards the authors of the Agile Manifesto. Diving a little deeper, we could certainly give credit to Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland in their development of a modern SCRUM model.
