In the Org Agility Conference Collin D. Ellis discussed four types of project managers

The Detailed PM (Working alone, Method Adherence, Detailed Emails, Thinking then acting)
The Action PM (Getting things done, calculated risks, creativity and authority, logic)
The People PM (Harmony and coaching others, building lasting relationships, loyalty)
The Social PM (Thinking on their feet, Social activities, having fun, flexibility)

I think I am a mix of three of these, Detailed, Action, and Social. I have met highly detailed PM's - I don't always work well with them. Same with highly action-oriented and social PM's.

I am a combination and have been recognized for managing accordingly. It's funny when you sit down and try to say I am …. I have been a PM a long time and found that I frequently have to take a deep breath and adjust to the team or the person on the team I am dealing with. Anupam Ganguly's point "as the role demands" is a good one too. I some times fill different roles on different projects and the demands for management style have to be tailored to that environment or culture.
