In the PMI Org. Agile Conf.- John Daly talked about seeing the PM role more as a leader rather than a manager.... very interesting. Personally, think the word leader is thrown around a little bit too much. So how does a "Project Leader" differ from a "Project Manager?

Leader motivates people. Boss tosses people. I assume PM is same as boss
Different organizations use different terminology but if someone has a job title Project Manager, I believe it does not say anything about their actual leadership skills. Succesful PMs are good leaders.

A project leader can be a project manager, but project manager is not a project leader. They both have certain tasks and plans. Project leader tells people all the basic information concerning the project.

A very interesting question Ephraim! If a PM is not a Project Leader then where does a Project Leader sit in the project hierarchy? Perhaps it's just my limited experience?

Is it because I tend to lead projects of less than 30 people across all levels? The project might have a Test Lead, Validation Lead, Technical Lead, sometimes a couple of work stream leads. I can't visualise where a Project Leader would sit and what responsibilities they would have. I keep coming back to "but the Project Manager does that". Even in a large project surely the Project Manager is leading?
