Requirements are at times difficult to articulate and understand. Some projects do not meet deadlines as the project teams take longer time to understand the requirements.

What are the problems associated with requirement elicitation? How do we overcome them?

I think the best one is business analysis as well if i am not wrong!!! Because, when you start collect requirements, you refer from project charter and project charter has inputs of business case!!!

There is one and only one: when you perform elicitation you will not get requirements. You will get needs/wishes/desires/wants/etc that you must transform into requirements after performing analysis activities. Mainly, well formed requirements (see IEEE Std 1233). Additional to that project manager must understand that she/he is in charge of project requirements and project requirements are defined from solution requirements. Business Analyst is in charge of the last one.

Damian -

issues specifically related to requirements elicitation are:

1. Unavailability of analysts to elicit requirements or stakeholders to participate in elicitation sessions
2. Not including everyone who should be involved in the process
3. Bias or hidden agendas reducing the quality of the questions asked or the information provided

The requirements are not easy to understand when they have been poorly compiled. The scope of the work has been expressed according to a misinterpretation. In addition, depending on the industry, the wording of the requirements is complex, it becomes ambiguous or does not express what is really required.
The objectives are often confused with specifications.
I believe that involving key team members will help to draft the scope of the work and the product in the early stages of the project.
