Volunteering can be a challenging sacrifice sometimes. What roles have you played? What unexpected experiences have you encountered? As a leader, how can volunteer efforts be properly harnessed?

I have, but not via PMI. It was teaching parts of the PMP program to aspirants overseas. It was brief but rewarding.

Yes. I participated in several programs, from scholarship applications review to PMI Awards, PMI Conferences submissions review and webinars.
It starts with the PDUs and ends as a hobby.
It is a wonderful experience and a rare occasion to give back to the PM community. It is also a good way to learn and to benchmark yourself against other PM professionals. Throughout volunteering I met many PMs and developed my professional network.
It feels very good to do something without a financial reward in mind.

Yes,
I volunteered with PMI-Washington DC chapter as an Operations Volunteer. Basically I helped facilitate chapter meetings. I was really impressed with the number of networking opportunities that were available and the diversity with the member's industry. I am certainly looking forward to additional opportunities, perhaps with regards to helping veterans tailor their skills towards project management.

Hi, I volunteered with my local PMI chapter but I did not stay long for several reasons.
I’m leading volunteering projects not related to PMI and I have amazing positive experience. But volunteering projects are very special and require specific leadership to make them efficient and reach the goals.

I have been volunteering in PMI Chapters since 2010. It is a great experience and you will get a lot of exposure.

Yes, I consider volunteering a great leadership program and sandbox. If you can manage a Board of a Chapter or a bunch of other volunteers, then you can manage without authority and make things happen.
Besides that, it grows your network, your humility and your tolerance.

Look out for my article in the December edition of PMI Today on the topic.

In Germany, about 20 million people are volunteering and their aggregated work is worth 135% of the payed work. Society is so much more than economy.

Yes, I have been volunteering in various capacities. Volunteering as PM Consultant for NFP organisations has been very rewarding as the organisations appreciated the work we have done through PMI Sydney Chapter, maturing their understanding and ability to apply project management processes. Growing your network, mixing with like-minded professionals, giving back to the community at large and the sense of achievement contributing to the profession as well as the community are a few benefits. Getting a team of volunteers is relatively easy, focusing their efforts and leading them to achieve successful outcomes requires strong leadership with great passion and ability to motivate, influence, and achieve while having fun.
