I would say disruptive technologies are considered to be those that significantly alter the way organizations, businesses or entire industries operate. These technologies force companies to alter the way they approach their operations and business, in a very short period of time or risk losing market share or becoming obsolete/irrelevant.
EXAMPLES - look at what PCs did to business in the late 80s and what the Internet did to business in the late 90s. Those were clearly disruptive.
