Think of a store. That store orders enough product to get through a certain time period. They place enough of it on the shelf to get through the day. You buy enough to get through the week. And you serve enough to have a meal.
That is Kanban in Agile. You keep only so much "product" at each stage of the workflow. In Lean, the idea is known as Just In Time manufacturing.
Workflows may need to be adjusted as you learn more, but the general idea is to create steps in your process. Maybe you have an "Initial review" to determine if you will move forward with a task, then an "In progress" if you start work on it. Within "In Progress" you may have other steps. Then you may have a "Testing" step, and finally a "Release"
Kanban should fit within you existing processes, but provide a way to control the flow.
