I am PMI certified PMP and being a part of PMI chapter seemed to be an excellent avenue for gathering novel knowledge and networking with alike project management professionals. Saving Changes...
For those who are getting started in the PM profession, a Chapter can provide a number of benefits including:
- networking with those more senior than you (to help you locate a mentor) and those at your level
- professional development through dinner presentations, symposiums and subsidized formal courses
- the chance to demonstrate your PM skills in a volunteer capacity
Mature, continuous improving chapters will also provide benefit to more senior practitioners, but not all do.

Very well said Kiron. My experience and feedback would be the exact same. I find it very beneficial especially for new PMs.

The amount of benefit you gain from joining your PMI chapter depends on your industry, career goals and the business culture in which you work (for example, is having the right connections vital to your career growth?). In my situation experience is worth far more than connections when it comes to advancing my career. This is probably one reason why my local PMI chapter wasn't very useful to me. I attended a few times immediately after I got my PMP, but I learned nothing of real value from the presentations, and I gained little from the networking. Saving Changes...

The benefit will equate to engagement. Take advantage of dinners, professional development days, speakers, etc., and the cost of the membership has an obvious value return. Additionally, there may be study groups to join. There are frequent group sessions in my local chapter. Either way, you are supporting the chapter which is good, right. Not all chapters are equal, so at the end of the day, totally dependent and up to you. I have not gone to any events this year, but will still join for next. Saving Changes...

Kavita, I am a board member of NWA PMI chapter. Joining PMI chapter is a good avenue for networking. Most of the chapters conduct CAPM, PMP and PMI-ACP certification courses with discounted prices. They also have study groups, so that members can have discussions for their exam preparation. It is a great opportunity to explore, don't miss it.

Thanks Pench for replying, I think i can make good use of study group and courses.
I think it would help to join and attend at least 1 event, especially if they have remote option. This way you can meet certified PMPs & CAPMs near you, who can advise you, how to fill out the application, what courses to take in your area, etc. We can help with that too, but I think there is benefit in meeting local CAPMs & PMPs. They could also become future connections for job search. I ALWAYS learn a lot at the events I attend. I attended a 2 day communications workshop at a local PMI chapter. It was entirely awesome. We got a great discount, including food and snacks, and i met so many nice people, 1 of whom i connected LinkedIn. Plus they have opportunities to be mentored, for free or inexpensively. These people care. I advise connecting on this network & LinkedIn soon after they event, so they remember you. Also there are 2 virtual PMI events upcoming: You can possibly meet people that way too. If you're a student, some local chapters offer discount membership as low as $15 or $25/year.
