The PMBOKĀ® Guide 6th Edition has introduced the project business case as an input into the project charter. In my opinion this is a very welcome addition, along with the project benefits management plan.
I'm interested to know if your projects always get initiated with a business case.

Interesting replies everyone thanks. I get the impression from reading all your comments that organisations are getting better at coming up with a business case prior to initiating projects. That'a a good thing. It shows there's a better understanding of project management amongst senior managers these days than perhaps was the case some years ago.

We have a different name for it. Its "Project Investment Appraisal Document" or PIAD, but yes its there for any Project undertaken by the organisation. Previously there was some exception.

Business case is like - why the project is required? So, without that, project does not exist

Business case should be prerogative of Project sponsor as he is the one who would be funding the project. He must visualize the value potential of the product/service that he is putting the money on.

PM in turn must make sure that he is in sync with sponsor by having clarity on business case.

Absolutely NOT! All my projects are strategic in nature.
