I'm currently an assistant principal where I am involved in many projects from beginning to end or forever changing. I'm currently working toward obtaining my CAPM using a course from PMI. I'm struggling with getting my foot in the door as an associate project manager or at any level. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Hi John,

Are you struggling due to no job offers or lack of positions in your area?

I honestly think it is a lack of understanding of what an assistant principal actually does in education. I work with 1600 middle school students and 150 staff members. I'm also focusing on orthopedics as I live in the orthopedic capital of the world in Warsaw.

Have you considered volunteering at charitable organizations? They always have events that need to be managed. This is a great way to build résumé experience.

John -

Have you joined your local PMI chapter and are you actively networking with members within it? What types of projects have you managed in your current role as you might have luck focusing on a role where you'd be managing similar types of projects...

Join a local PM chapter like Kirom suggested and look for roles like Project Coordinator as well besides Associate PM.

John, just get involved in any projects that you within your company, and it will build from there.

I'm not familiar with what that role entails. Perhaps you can get involved with facilities projects? Planning for teacher training events?
