I am in the same boat. but I have over 4000 hours of experience working on project teams. We have the same issue in California; PMP highly recommended with a degree in Construction Management. CAPM is a relatively new certification, and is useful for IT PM. Not so much in the construction industry.

You need to work as a project manager, associate project manager or Jr. PM so acquire those no of hours. I would same you need to have 3 - 5 years of PM experience.

Jelette,

It's a catch-22: You need a PMP to get the PM job required to gain the experience you need to sit for the PMP exam.
I think your best option is to become a PM via an indirect route. Try this: Become part of a project team in an organization that performs a lot of projects. Once you're in, talk to various PMs about your goal, and ask them to let you handle various parts of their projects so you can gain experience. As you demonstrate yourself capable of performing PM work, you'll hopefully be able to get your own project to manage, and so become a PM.

Hi,

Does CAPM certification need any membership or it can be done without any membership?

It can be done without but you get a discount on the exam if you purchase them both

The best thing you can do is work your way up. Start as a BA, project analyst/coordinator etc

I concur with Eric on this.
You can also look for volunteer opportunities.

You don't need to have PM experience to qualify for the PMP hours, but experience working on projects. I discovered I have more Project Experience than I realized AFTER I got familiar with PMBOK guide definitions of projects when I sat for CAPM. I am planning on completing my PMP application in the next month and sit for it next year.

Jelette,

Also take a look at positions within PMOs. Through a role there, you can get project experience, which can then help towards getting a PMP, or streaming through to a PM role within the same organization.
