How to assert authority when your responsibilities overlap with coworker?
I think one way is to get the clarification from the boss about your responsibilities vs the coworker or may be just try supporting the coworker and see what happens. What's your opinion?

Meet with the co-worker and your boss to figure out the interaction model. It might be that your boss wants the two of you to self-organize as a team rather than as individual - if so, work with the co-worker to figure out who will tackle what. Depending on the level of trust in the team, the outcomes might need to be formally documented (like a RACI) or could be sealed with a handshake (or a coffee!).

With whom are you trying to assert authority? Your coworker? Or someone else?
Writing a detailed description of the overlapping responsibilities might help. It could be that you and your coworker perform different aspects of the same responsibilities, and this differentiation could help determine which of you should assert authority in different situations.

You need to delineate individual and shared tasks within the realm of responsibility that you both share.

If your responsibilities (work to do) overlap then you are performing the same role then there is not authority (accountability) to assert.
