The main objectives for any organization (not only companies) is to survive, to growth and to develop. Like any other system in this world. The mean to do that is what could be consider ethic or not.

I am saying the mean must be judge in the framework of ethic and ethic is not something that must be put in subjective layer. What do you consider if yourself make profit because it is a way to survive, growth and develop for yourself?

Absolutely ethical companies can make a profit. Ethics is a core principle in many companies that are quite profitable. In fact in highly regulated industries, ethics can make companies more profitable. Regulators are more likely to delegate oversight responsibility for complying with regulations to the companies that show a commitment to ethics, rather than burdening them with additional oversight.

I think that if an organization wants to be profitable over the extended term, then it is in their best interests to be ethical. Unethical behavior can be profitable in the short term, but as an old salesman once told me, you can swindle a person once, but you can give them fair deals for the rest of their life.

Do you mean to say that companies that make profits are not ethical? :)
Of course, companies that have ethical practices can make profits, what's more, they are the ones that sustain and are long standing.

Hi Ted,

The definition of an ethical company according to the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/money/2001/nov/13/ethicalmoney)

"Broadly speaking, a truly ethical company will be one that is not causing damage to the environment, exploiting its workforce by paying low wages, using child labour, or producing products which are harmful or dangerous."

Can these companies be profitable? Of course!

The short answer: yes, an ethical company can be profitable.

The longer answer: The combination of cultural and economic systems we inhabit exert social forces on our behavior. Capitalism has historically been an economic system that carelessly or callously considers workers and the environment in a race to produce products or services at the most profitable prices. [On the optimistic side, the most creative and brilliant products and services are rewarded by the market through dollar (currency) votes of consumers.]

Capitalism does not exist in a vacuum, however. Government, politics (local, national, and international), and other social forces impact strategic choices. Technology has connected our global communities more tightly than ever before in history. What does this mean for ethics? We now have a quest to broaden our definition of what ethical decisions mean ---- how low is too low when it comes to wages or when does a society expect a young person to be eligible for the workforce or what does a 'positive' corporate legacy look like? When is a bribe unethical and when it is it the course of normal bureaucratic business?

In recent years, a movement called "responsible" or "ethical" Capitalism is seeking to make social responsibility a core corporate concern.Or at least bring greater awareness to the importance of socially responsible corporate existence. Companies like Whole Foods, Tom's Shoes, and Henry Schein attempt to demonstrate how successful ethical capitalism can be.

Yes, an organization need to have Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Ethics to meet the Triple Bottom Line framework - social, environmental, and financial responsibilities.
