There is a vast assortment of options for residential solar. In addition to ground mount arrays for those who have the open land, there are options for flat and pitched roofs. This includes solutions for composition shingle, concrete tile, and other roofing applications. It had actually become very common in the industry over the last decade. The key is offsetting the costs, which only increase as tariffs hit...and incentives are decreasing. Saving Changes...
In Ontario, there had been a two option scheme provided by one of the suppliers:
1. Have them install the solar panels on your house, but all the electricity generated is returned to the grid and you get paid for the "use" of your roof.
2. You purchase the solar panels and are able to use the generated electricity but a subsidy is provided and low interest rates to be able to stretch out the payment comfortably over a decade or two.
Tesla has a Cadillac option (no surprise :-) ) with their elegant flat batteries and panels but I don't believe they are installing those in Canada yet. The cost for a medium sized house would be in the $50-60K range so this isn't a cheap option if government subsidies aren't provided.

The problem with homes is that at the time when solar panels generate electricity, you (usually) aren't at home, and then you need someway to "sell" the egergy to the grid, or to "store" in expensive bateries.
The best solution (for the home owner financial interests) I've heard in Costa Rica is the #1 that Kiron commented, to "rent" your roof to the utility company, this happens because utilities are renting roofs to try not to loose those customers. Saving Changes...
In Yemen most of residential homes are using Solar panels ( just for getting a very simple light).
People used to buy 1 or 2 solar panels with a minimum one battery.
No public electricity found since 8 years and imagine that we (a students and academic) are still struggling to get/participate/research for knowledge.
Thanks for India and China for their cheap technologies.
