What books or other resources would you recommend for those entering executive management?

In my experience when starting out their are clear tasks with clear procedures. Making decisions are relatively simple. As I've progressed into new roles with more responsibilities I've found the tasks and procedures become less clear. Decision now become increasingly complex with no clear "right" or "wrong" solution. There are no guidelines and colleagues may have different agendas or motivations.

I'm looking to benefit from other's real experience.

Gavin -

Two books I'd suggest as foundational - both are heavy reading, but well worth it.

Greenleaf's Servant Leadership and McGregor's The Human Side of Enterprise.

Then I'd suggest reading Lencioni's Three Signs of a Miserable Job, Daniel Pink's Drive and any of Scott Adams's books on management...

The Essential Drucker could be useful as well.

And remember that who you are becomes equally (or more) important as what you do

I will have to check that one out Kiron: Greenleaf's Servant Leadership.

If you like to be a C-executive forget about to read books relating management style because management style will be determined by the culture the organization you are working on. Read books about management like Perter Druker suite (as Samuel stated), Ackoff, Prahalad, Tom Peters, Potter and read all related to systemic theory lkie Mario Bunge. The last one is a must to be a C-executive in agile environments today that agile becomes a buzzword. All these books or papers (if you do not have enough time to read the whole book) will help you to understand the environment where you are and performing the activities you need. About decisions, there are specific books on theory of decisions.
