I'm looking for some input from other Project Managers for how they have celebrated project success when working in virtual environments.

I've got a team that's distributed among 4 different countries and we're coming towards the end of our project and we wont be able to meet onsite before the end of the project.

What do you do when your team aren't located in the same location to celebrate success? Previously, I've done the following but wondering if there's anything different /new:

1) Team "video" closing parties
2) Sending cakes/cards/little momento's to say thank you/ good job!
3) Congratulation /thank you emails to the team

If your budget can accommodate it, why not get a consolidated image of everyone's signature or their avatars and then have those embossed onto a plaque or printed on t-shirts, mouse pads or something similar.

That way, they'll have something to look at years after the project ends.

Definitely a tough one. For smaller projects I just go with a final conference call. Also, for one of my project members I sent an email to his boss detailing how good he was on the project. That's not a team reward but he got promoted 6 months later.

That's a good idea Kiron! I like the idea of giving a Project Momento like a mousepad/ notepad etc.

What if there's not a lot of time left in the project?

In that case, I'd make a simple PDF poster which could be printed at each location with the shared contributions of the virtual team.

Ideas on what they'd contribute are:
- Photo
- Signature
- Avatar
- their fondest memory of the project

Thanks Paul! I've found the email of appreciation to work really well for longer term appreciation.

A good idea, you could print out the poster and send to team members with a personal thank you note

Golf/t-shirts is also a good idea with just the project name and year to remind them of the good or bad times. For the latter they might end up washing the car with it but it will still have a use ;)

Interesting question Emily. I haven't done this before but I like Kiron's idea. Let us know what you end up doing.

Touch screens don't work for me, Riyadh, as I've fat finger syndrome and I dislike touchpads on laptops, so mice are the way to go :-)

You could stitch together a video to create a simple project/program video and showcase this on your company's website or Facebook page etc. Get each team/person to send something in from their location. They may be celebrating with a cake or it might be an individual talking about themselves or their contribution. Then add a bit saying thank you from the Sponsor or customers etc. So not a party video as such but more of a showcasing the people.
