I knew many people choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons.

I am not trying to debate volunteer work I just want to know if it helped and provided you a job as outcome whether based on networking or experience gained.

Good question, since we seem to recommend that path quite often :) Would love to hear of some success stories.

I'm guessing if anyone gained a job from volunteering with a PMO chapter it was indirectly (the experience gained from volunteering enabled the person to sit for their PMP certification test which they passed, and this led to them getting a job). I look forward to seeing the responses.

Riyadh -

It's happened only once for me. I was in my final year as a director on the board of our local chapter, and I was able to land a senior PM role with the assistance of a fellow board director who happened to be in a position of influence at the same company.

I do find that volunteering can be a differentiator for your profile, but it usually will only help once you've made it through an initial filtering round and are in a face-to-face interview situation.

It never happened with me before that I found a job through volunteering but I know it happened with at least two of my friend while volunteering at their local chapters.

Actually it is a good thing to give back and I really want to participate but the problem the chapter is 5 hours drive away from me. I can't see that you can be director and not attend a meeting and virtual conference doesn't work all the time.

In our chapter (PMI Madrid Spain Chapter) we´re working to provide a certificate as a proof of project management experience in some specific volunteers initiatives managed as a project.

As an example, this year congress was managed by two volunteers. It can be considered as a project.

In that way, they can include it both in CV and experience needed to be a PMP certified in case of audit.

If a PMI chapter is satisfied with your performance as project manager....this is a very good reference!!
