I knew many people choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons.
I am not trying to debate volunteer work I just want to know if it helped and provided you a job as outcome whether based on networking or experience gained. Saving Changes...

Hi guys, I do volunteering and I enjoy it a lot, it gives me network, experience, I learned a lot of new stuff. This may help to get a job but I don’t think that there is a direct link. It also depends on the job you’re looking for. If you’re on junior position than you can use it to showcase your experience. But for more senior people I believe it’s more enrichment and good feeling that you get rather than a job. Right now I help with community outreach program where we teach high school kids project management. It’s so uplifting to work with students. I like it a lot. But I don’t see and also honestly I don’t plan to use this experience in my job search.

You raise a good point about the link between volunteering's impact on one's job hunting efforts and their experience level.
Mario, you have a nice active chapter good for you but looks like no one landed a job based on the chapter volunteer work. thanks for your feedback Saving Changes...

Lenka, you have a point here and that's good but what happen in reality many companies abuse the system of volunteering and that dis-encourage many people to do it.

As a coincidence, I just talked to one lady yesterday who is retired and does vokunteeering and as you say, she quit one because the company was treating volunteers like responsible employees with a lot of duties but no salary. That’s sad and I don’t know how much is this happening elsewhere. I also quit one “job” because I have doubts about efficiency of volunteers management and use of the valuable time that was dedicated. But apart from that I have good experience. It’s like in a real job, a lot depends on leadership skills of your boss.

I've been volunteering for many year in different capacities, within the PM/BA professions but also outside at charity organizations and never got a job because of it. It seems to be general consensus and I think it is because the motivation is never really to job hunt but to give back and learn. BTW I say I never got a job because of it only because nobody ever said 'great see you are a volunteer, do you want this job'. It might be a contributing factor though?

Anton, that's the dark side of the story I believe that people do that for give back or as per Maslow's hierarchy of needs but looks like not many can nail a job because of volunteering

Hello Riyadh: I was able to strengthen my resume with PMI Chapter volunteer work and was a Director of Programs for our local chapter. Not only was the work fun and educational, but I made many contacts and in my most recent interview, the volunteer work was called out and questions asked. They were very interested and supportive of my local chapter involvement. For sure it was an additional highlight to my resume.
