There are differences between Planner and Scheduler as far as scope of work some organization have both some only one Planner some don't they expect the Project Manager to do every thing so if you have do they report to you?

Mounir welcome back such an Honour to see you shining back here after long time.
Thanks for your valued comments I mentioned the difference between both positions in few word as Planner do What scope to do & How to do it the procedure if the job needs scaffoldings for example what tools required, Scheduler do Who will do the job & When the right time to do it if power shutdown needed.
What I was looking here if that they report to Pm and you do have them on the project
I agree with you that even estimator position hard to find though all those roles are very important for big project
This lead me to the question if there was scheduler on the project and he/she carry PMI-SP will he/she be then reporting to the Project Manager whether PM has PMP or not
Riyadh

Thank you for the kind words.

Remove certifications from the discussions because you could have a planner or scheduler with a PMP and PM without one - so certification is not a factor.

Who do these positions report to, like all team members, for the project activities they must report to the PM.

Again, remember Matrix. If you are in a projectized organization then these positions are part of the team and report exclusively to the PM.

If you are in a matrix organization and these resources are full time on a project, then they report to PM, only. If they are part timer, then they report to the PM for his/her specific project; although organizationally they could be in another unit.

Hope this clarifies

Tamer, I agree that IT projects are completely different from big construction or erection projects
Sure, IT projects are different but they can still benefit from the expertise of planners, schedulers, and other project management roles - but they do not, unfortunately

I attended the AgilePM course recently and one of the participants (a Project Manager) used to work for a company where the scheduler was not reporting to the PM. If the PM wanted to change the schedule , he had to plead with the scheduler and give a "Valid" reason to make changes. He even mentioned that the schedulers were not very friendly or accommodating. Suffice to say , I pray that I never get to work in such an organization!

Deepesh, see that's must be a nightmare the PM is accountable but yet he can not manage the scheduler, I can feel your frustration but it exist quite often in weak matrix organization or where relatives employed.

According to "DON NYMAN " the planner and scheduler can be the same person performing both jobs or can be separated for each one and as we have seen sometimes the PM has to do all the work.
