new experience that qualifies as real project experience

I work in accounts receivable in a position that was newly created. I am working on an accounts receivable age report in excel that will be as automated as I can make it. is this considered a real project?

You can call it a project. But, if you like to have it count for your PMP, you should at least consider creating key documents like a charter, some project management plans, do stakeholder analysis, write test plans etc. That will also give you experience working with these tools.

This would be a great opportunity to utilize the templates on the site and see how they are utilized in real practice.

This would meet a textbook definition of a project (unique, timebound, consumea resources and generates value) but most organizations would establish specific criteria (e.g. minimum effort or cost) on what they would want managed as projects (as opposed to small change activities).
