If there are organization standards or policies around methodology selection, start there.
If not, then profile the project with the core team and tailor your approach accordingly.
Many of the companies I've worked with have developed in-house profiling tools to help them understand where a given project lies on the continuum from predictive to adaptive.

1. Org guidelines, standards, checklist, approach - hopefully there's something you can leverage/reference
2. Project profile - requires some amount of experience or at least understanding of what factors drive the selection, web has lots of guidance on this
3. Experience - ask as many people as you can what approach they'd take in this specific case, and why
4. Take a shot - try one

I'm in agreement with Kiron.
Generally speaking, in order of approach:
In addition to the above comments, in the "project profile" step, approaches and methodologies tend to fall into 2 categories:
1) Develop something new
2) Improve something existing
The tools differ such as Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) for a new development, vs. DMAIC (Define Measure Analyze Improve and Control) for improvements to something existing. Saving Changes...

Really great response from Kiron. While we may have many tools in our tool chest, there should be some consistent set of criteria for which to follow and assess initiatives. If they don’t exist, create them! Work smart, work forward. Saving Changes...

Possibly, but I would suggest that if your organization has a checklist, approach, policy, etc for determining which method to follow that that would take precidence.
