Kanban is not a Project Management tool. It is a Lean practice that can be used for software delivery. Remeber: project = cost+time+scope. Kanban manages only delivery flow

Kanban is a system (not software system) created long time ago (1934 at least) that is well known for people that worked in manufacturing mainly with just-in-time concepts. If you go to factories you will find Kanban boards around the factory. So, it is not about a specific project. is about to understand Kanban is a tool that you can use for any type of things ir you understand what kanban is first and then if Kanban is useful for you as a tool to achieved an objective. Remember: is a system then it is not just "put cards into a board".

Milind -

Are you asking on which projects a Kanban continuous flow-based approach would be preferable to a sprint-based approach? That really comes down to understanding the workflow itself. Sprint-based approaches work well when dealing with teams which are new to agile delivery, where work items can be decomposed sufficiently that they can be completed within a sprint, and where the team truly collaborates on completing work items. When you are in a situation where work items regularly span more than one sprint or where the work being done is more of a workflow with work items passing from one role to another then Kanban might work better. Kanban can also be incrementally introduced - start with visualizing workflow, then introduce WIP limits and so on...

Thanks Kiron.

Can any project be tried on trial and error basis in Kanban, even Scrum projects as well?

Hi Milind,

A relevant source would be start with PMI's Agile Practice Guide. You can search the project management content for clearer understanding on the subject. All the best!

Kiron nailed that, I totally agree with his input.

Kiron, thank you for condensing in a paragraph what the difference between kanban and Scrum is and when should be used for product delivery, not for Project Management.

Milind, Kanban is a method that helps teams facilitate the flow of value by visualizing workflow, establishing Work In Process (WIP) limits, measuring throughput, and continuously improving their process. Based on the above you can select the projects. Most of the times, support projects are good fit for Kanban but not limited to.

Good insight on when kanban is good although there is no such thing as "support projects". That's Business as Usual or Operations. A project is defined by limited time and by deliverables.
