Too broad to answer that, but basically, the key part is that they OWN the deliverable or outcome

Dependent on how the question is interpreted.
Open and regular communication. Being pragmatic. Identifying and satisfying dependencies and issues, realizing and tackling hurdles and blockers .... all that good stuff :)

In my case I use a method to assure "stay on track" which is a combination or time spent, effort done, remained time and remained effort. I mean, I do not think that things will happens exactly in the moment they are planned. I am using traffic lights based in remainded time and remainded effort and company threshold form time and cost. So, when the taffic light is yellow we need to talk about what I can do as project manager to facilitate all needed to put it on green.

1. Is the deadline realistic and did the team contribute to & buy into the deadline definition? If not, nothing will ensure they stay on track.

2. Are you managing schedule risks effectively?

3. Are you monitoring & controlling regularly so that detection & recovery of schedule variances is possible?

4. How are you helping your team to stay on track, motivated, and healthy?

Monitoring the progress of project and deliverables. Defining some KPIs may help.

Make sure the task break down is small enough that you can check on status and know if things are late as early as possible. Communicate, communicate and communicate some more.

I tailor my oversight to the individual sub-teams who are contributing to my projects so that I don't become one of those PMs that spends all day asking people for status.

Some teams develop and manage their own detail level plans very well and keep me well informed of progress and problems. These are by far the easiest to work with, and I try not to interfere with their progress whenever possible.

Other teams start thinking about the deliverable the day before they are due. These teams require much more oversight, and I usually have to work with them individually to lay out the detail level plan of what they must do to and when leading up to the due dates.

Most fall somewhere between. They have a plan, but it might need some changes to fit well with other teams, or I must be diligent to ensure that when one team's plan changes, impacts to other teams are also taken into account, and everyone is working to the same plan.

Planning, monitoring and controlling and effective communications are the pillars for project success. As for construction project, the team shall clearly understand the monthly and weekly target and aware of the acceptance criteria and related specifications to for effectiveness and efficiency in completing project deliverables

Daily Report and effective communications will have significant performance improvement

Influencing key Stakeholders is the road map for success
Acting effectively and demanding strongly for their support is a must i.e., The top management for resources and funds, the consultant for timely reply and approvals, the client for his support in issues pending with the consultant, the end user for defining their expectations and requirements in planning and even finalizing them in executing stage
