How does one define behaviour?

In organisations today, the key theme is 'behaviour' which in my opinion is subjective thinking. Today organisations employ people from all walks of life that cannot possibly fit into a set expectation. Background and lifestyle must not affect perceptions of them as a professional or affect their opportunities for development and yet it does. The question therefore is how does one define behaviour !

Thank you

Hello Vasoula,

I think the key theme is "attitude" and not "behavior"! All the professionals (educated and qualified people) have simillar behavior, but not everyone has the right attitude!

Let me know your thoughts.

Best Regards,

In my organisation, Behaviour refers to output events, signals, messages, or other indicators of behaviour in response to various scenarios. Behaviour is the visible output of the combined effect of a person’s knowledge, skills, experience and motivations (values, ethics, opinions, beliefs, etc.). The Behavioural Competencies Dictionary that the British Council use (available on the web) is a good reference document that takes into account mutual understanding between cultures.

Thank you Kathy - it does make lots of logical sense. I believe diversity should be a top Senior Executive agenda item in each and every organisation, treating people equally and with respect, the benefits to be gained are tremendous, staff loyalty to the organisation is one of them.

Thank you Vivekanandan - it is also interesting that you mentioned attitude. I think attitude and behaviour are some what linked. Attitude can be negative and positive as it is made up of what we think, what we do, what we feel, that is usually a major influence contributor to our behaviour - i.e. being negative or positive. The good thing about Attitude it can be changed to a positive mind set in the way we respond to various scenarios as Kathy stated.

Thank you both, this is a wide and interesting subject that I do feel each and everyone of us may interpret and or define attitude and behaviour based on their own life experiences.

Other comments from members are most welcome.

In my opinion "Behaviors" are in born characters that enact in various situations. They may be right or wrong but it sometimes is a positive factor, which you need one to have and sometime it is negative factor that you want to get rid off. No one can hide the fact we all have played a part in behaving in different ways depending on different situations. You can correct your behaviors only when you are able to control them.

Thanks ever so much Xavier it is so true that we do tend to behave in different ways depending on the circumstances if we can also be in control not always. I have learned throughout my professional work that you can say almost anything as long as it is not deemed to be aggressive behaviour. I also learned that what we may perceive as being right in any given circumstance, others may perceive it completely different that can cause misunderstandings as we all have our own beliefs, our perception is our truth. Perception can be misleading with facts no one can argue with and as long as people accept other people that they are different and treat them with respect.
