is PMP Certification helpful for career progression in Mechanical/Mechanical Engineering Services industry?

I'm a Mechanical Engineer with core competency of design & analysis of Gas Turbines. I'd like to progress with my career in Project Management as a professional. I have 4+ years of project management experience as well, alongside my technical skills. And I still keep my technical skills updated by actively involving in execution as needed.

I'm planning to get the PMP certification to be more serious about my career progression in project management.

How much will the certification be useful, really? as I see many of these certifications PMP, Agile, PRINCE2, etc are majorly used in the software development(IT) industries.

I'd also like to form a new network or join any group that has PMP certified Mechanical Engineers to connect more with people of my similar background.

A PMP will help you approach Project Management in a more structured way.
It will help provide additional credibility to your years of PM experience.
It will enable you to dig deeper and ask questions.
It will give you an overview of the various tools and techniques which you can later use and tailor to your projects.
It is industry agnostic so does not matter if you are from a non IT background.
But a word of caution, once you get into the grunt of project management , and if you wish to do it properly , you will slowly need to let go of your need to get too involved in the Technical aspects. You will be more of a leader/negotiator/manager than the actual "doer" when it comes to completion of technical activities.

I am a Mechatronics Engineer which is a combination of Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic along with computer studies. My opinion is that PMP certification is a plus point for Engineers. It shows your interest and commitment in Project Management and displays that your Project Management skills are at the peak when certified as a Professional.
