I am preparing to give a presentation for a large group of project managers on Bullying and Project Management. There are many excellent resources on this ProjectManagement.com site who have created fantastic presentations and blogs on the topic of bullying - many from Paul Pelletier and others. I've tied these slides in with definitions of what bullying is, why people bully others, who is targeted, how it feels to be bullied, what the costs of bullying are to a company or to a team, the results of bullying, more subtle things that people do (eye rolling, gossiping, etc.) that are bullying behaviors, what to do when witnessing bullying, how to stand up to bullying, ways to help prevent bullying, the difference between normal conflict and bullying and tied it all in with our PMI code of ethics. Is there anything else I should include in my presentation? Have you ever experienced bullying in the workplace? If so, would you be willing to share your experience with me? Saving Changes...

Hello Nicole: Thank you so much for sharing your experience with bullying. In an 2018 survey by the Balance, they determined 60 million Americans are affected by workplace bullying. It is so shocking! When many describe how it feels when bullied, they also often use the words frustrating and draining like you did. It is hard to deal with those subtle ways of bullying like providing wrong info or trying to control the information others receive about you. These are some of the reasons I want to try to bring awareness and begin more conversations on this topic. We need to find positive helpful solutions for preventing and dealing with bullying so we can all go back to work in environments that are creative and productive. So many people keep silent about their experiences, so thank you again for being brave enough to share with us here on this discussion.

No problem, Lori. If there is anything else you need please reach out. I am also committed to this cause. I am creating a website with content that will help those being bullied manage themselves better and also to provide information, training and coaching to both bullies, bystanders and just people in general who want to promote healthier work environments. Thanks for all of your hard work on bringing this important issue to the forefront!

Oh Nicole - I love that you are showing your commitment by creating a website to help others. Can you share the site with us? If so, would it be ok for me to add your link to my information so others could benefit from your content as well?

Don't know if it's too late, but here is my 2-cents worth of what I would love to see answered:
- What are the techniques and impacts of bullying from the different levels of the organisation... from bosses, to peers, to HR, to even "underlings"?
- Does PM approach influence the bullying factor? In my experience, I have also found that Agile puts many mechanisms in place to relieve bullying to an extent... but for the better part, people only pay lip service.
- Is there a greater occurrence of bullying among more senior or junior employees? Gender differences? Cultural differences? I have found, for example, that in general European cultures are much less "politically correct" and this can often lead to feeling of bullying or harassment.
- What is REALLY an effective way to deal with bullies, when the hierarchy and/or company is too politicised to do anything?

Marina, I like your inclusion of cultural bias. Not every observer will interpret the same behavior as "bullying." The ramifications of this are complex, and could easily spin into a new conversation.

Is the actual context make more acceptable bullying?
Some leaders/influencers in the various walk of life are bullying and society seems to accept that.
It shouldn't make it more acceptable in the organization or project.
Why not make a webinar later on the subject?

Hello Vincent: My hope is to bring awareness about bullying in the workplace - I was shocked to learn how many workers face bullying daily while trying to do their job. My aim is to open the subject, provide a safe place to discuss bullying, offer insight into why others bully and share practical ways for project managers to deal with these types of behaviors. I will work with this website after the presentation in live to see if I can share this information in a webinar. Awareness and making positive change is so important on this subject.
