I concur with my colleagues here.
I think the main purpose of a kickoff meeting is to introduce the team members, understand the background, understand what success looks like, discuss on what needs to be done, and agree on how to work together effectively.
Bang on.

Lot of good feedback here.

Normally, in many instances a kickoff meeting is the launch of a new project. Planning usually begins with the project sponsor to plan an agenda,messaging and other details the sponsor wants to share with the team and key stakeholders.

Shadav, likeNaomi defined the initial kickoff meeting to introduce sponsor with project team, however You wont find PMBOK guide emphasize much on kickoff meeting. There are others more important meetings through out the project.

Get an experienced facilitator to engage the group and explain what you are trying to achieve out of the meeting.
Get biscuits and Lollies, Butcher paper, whiteboard markers, post it notes.
Brain storm ! Brain-Storm and Brain Storm ! encourage active participation
Send the agenda before the meeting and encourage any questions or clarifications from your participants.
