Presently, the brief profile next to member's responses/answer shows member's network size. Does the influence score provide better metrics for member's knowledge and community influence? Please vote at the poll,
1. Yes. Influence score is a better metrics.
2. No. Network size is just appropriate.
3. Maybe both. Network size along with influence score is better.
4. Neither. These are irrelevant to answer/responses.

Also, please share your understanding on influence score and its relevance to member's knowledge and community influence.

Ashok,
I completely agree with the potential value for a useful metric, and I think that you and I share a healthy skepticism of advertisements. I also have a great deal of respect for the challenges in developing meaningful metrics to measure things which are very difficult to measure directly.

The art and science of creating meaningful metrics is a subject I've probably considered more than most people would probably consider healthy, and 2 quotes come immediately to mind:

"Statistics don't lie but anyone can lie using statistics." If you understand how the numbers are compiled and interpreted you can game the numbers.

"All models are wrong, but some are useful." George Box got this one dead on the nose. The ability to game the numbers doesn't mean that they're all useless.

At present, I'd like to think that there are meaningful metrics to be found here, but I maintain a healthy skepticism myself regarding the value of the current model used to produce the metrics.

Hope you're having a great weekend...

Ashok, I concur with Sergio I found the score is just a mind game and it does not reflect reality as you can fill it by continuous saying thanks for sharing and every day two questions to jack it up but the real value is the knowledge we share and learn here it is sad if you don't log in for two days you get punished and the score drop like a falling knife and you need to do much more to bring back the same level of score so for me I stopped looking at the score
It is good when you free your mind from it then you can just focus on useful things

I don't comment on every thing for a reason, however I was laughing when I read that someone mentioned his high score on LinkedIn or might right it on the resume high influence LOL :) this will not launch a job . I believe it would be better to show how many active on line at the time you log in

Ashok, forgot to mention about the size of network I also find that too much filling wont make it better I mean by that there are so many people with just name no photo, zero connection no contribution no complete profile the question do you really want to connect just to increase the numbers I don't think so. I believe we need to use filter more often unless you are looking for something else.

I respectfully disagree with judging an individuals sense of accomplishment with a [earned] high influence rating. It is worth the proud feeling to be engaged in your professional community, taking the time and effort to add valuable contributions. There are over 500K members and only a handful of them contribute regularly. I certainly have no problem with sharing my passion for my profession and level of engagement, and same if anyone else does the same. Be proud to be an engaged community member. I personally, would want to work with an individual who cares enough to share their knowledge and passion with others.

Let's not forget the reason we come to this community. And let's not let the influence rating taint the true passion underneath. It's called gamification for a reason. Is it so bad it adds motivation? That 's the point. I'd say let's focus on being here as a tight community and let the rest lie. If some want to work the system, fine. I will not let it make me feel any type of way for contributing.

If you contribute, pat yourself on the back. Without you, there would be no community.

And, btw, that individual you are speaking of is a highly respected member of this community. Please be respectful.

I sense there is some level of disagreement on the significance of influence scores and how it should be used for the member’s benefit / site-reputation. Also, there is great deal of mystery surrounds the spread of the influence values, especially around the incremental changes in either direction.

At outset, the site managers have done an impressive job to groom the concept of influence score. They have provided a metrics, which is still evolving from its nascent stage in a democratic way. It’s up to overall community how they would like to use it and hopefully algorithms will catch-up with that. This also applies to this comment section. I’d prefer our comments on this topic should be around the potential / future possibilities and not what happened in the past.

Also, I'd like more participation at the associated poll. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps I did not understand your post but let me say there is no mystery about how the score is calculated. You can read the formula in this site. As any other metric you can do anything to incline the metric to one site as any other number people can understand the number with different visions. I am talking about manipulation which in my personal opinion is not the behavior people must follow. I do not judge anyone. Just if you take notice about how the influence score is calculating and you decide to manipulate it you will find the way. I spend lot of time in this site because I learn a lot from people comments and posts. If you see the answers or comments inside blogs or you see the amount of questions without any sense (in my opinion) some people post here you will understand how people is manipulating it.

Ashok,
Bear in mind that the people responding "I don't find it useful", from what I can tell are already experts in their own fields with well formed opinions. If you are someone who doesn't already know enough regarding PM to know who to listen to, it's an entirely different equation.

I give full credit to the people working for the site who are trying to create a valuable metric. "Influence" really is a very difficult thing to try and measure with an algorithm, especially when it is not tied to a person's resume. I very much appreciate the challenge of trying to answer the question, knowing the inevitable criticism.
